I tried live (usb) sessions with Ubuntu 16.04.3, Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon and 18.2 MATE, but they also run slow, especially if I have say, some websites open in the browser and a document open in LibreOffice Writer. “nomodeset” is required to keep them from freezing altogether. I installed them on a usb 3.0 stick, but they will only run in at 2.0 port.

1. Of the three I tested, I prefer the MATE desktop. Is this a suitable version, or should I be looking at something else? My intended use for this machine is web browsing, image editing, and light document processing.
2. How much of a performance increase can I expect once I install it on the ssd?
